Course Materials

The textbook for this course is Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Lay, et al. It comes with an access code to access the online homework on MyLab Math.

Students must have access to a computer and webcam to use Lockdown Browser for exams and a way to submit PDFs of handwritten work.

Course Description

Systems of equations, matrices, determinants, linear transformations on vector spaces, characteristic values and vectors, from a computational point of view. The course is an introduction to the techniques of linear algebra with elementary applications.

Course Objectives

The goal for the semester is to learn, understand and be able to work with the main ideas of linear algebra, including

•    systems of linear equations and row operations

•    matrices, matrix operations

•    vector spaces (concrete and abstract) and their bases

•    linear transformations and change of basis matrices

•    eigenvectors and eigenvalues

•    various matrix factorizations

•    applications

This means that you should not only be able to work through a bunch of problems similar to ones seen in the homework, but also that you should have the ability to articulate the ideas presented in the course in a clear and coherent manner as well. You should be able to apply the theory in new and imaginative ways. This course will have concrete and abstract components. Being able to explain why something is true will  constitute a significant part of the course.

Course Outline

●   Week 1 - Chapter 1: Linear Equations in Linear Algebra 1.1-1.5, 1.6-1.9

●   Week 2 - Chapter 2: Matrix Algebra, 2.1-2.3 & Chapter 3: Determinants, 3.1-3.3

●   Week 3 - Chapter 4: Vector Spaces, 4.1-4.6

●   Week 4 - Chapter 5: Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, 5.1-5.5

●   Week 5 - Chapter 6: Orthogonality and Least Squares, 6.1 - 6.5 & Chapter 7: Symmetric Matrices and Quadratic Forms 7.1-7.2

Student Authentication

The University of Connecticut is required to verify the identity of students who participate in distance learning or online courses and to establish that students who register in these courses are the same students who participate in and complete the course activities and assessments and receive academic credit. Verification and authentication of student identity in this course will include:

1.   Secure access to the learning management system using your unique UConn NetID and password.

2.   Online proctoring during weekly tests and the Final Exam using Lockdown Browser with Respondus Monitor. This will require a recording of student display of UConn ID and assessment session.

Students who do not complete the above-required authentication steps may be denied access to the course and given an incomplete. Students could lose credit if faculty cannot confirm the identity of the student enrolled in the course and completing activities and assessments. Please be sure that you have submitted a photo to the One Card office by following the directions here:https://onecard.uconn.edu/the-one- card/online-photo-submission/.

Course Requirements and Grading

Online Homework

There will be online homework corresponding to (almost) every section we cover that can be accessed through MyLab Math on HuskyCT. Online homework is due weekly on Sunday at 11:59 pm (except for the week 5 homework which is due Friday August 9th ). I strongly recommend you complete several sections each day. Suggested pacing for each week can be found on the course calendar at the end of this document.

Written Homework

Written homework will be assigned for each chapter and will be due on Gradescope. Written homework

should be completed individually and reflect your own understanding of the material. Written homework is

due weekly on Sunday at 11:59 pm (except for the Ch 6 HW which is due Friday August 9th). It will be graded for quality and completion. Solutions will be posted and part of your grade will come from grading

your own solutions and writing a one paragraph reflection about what you need to review more and how    you plan to improve your understanding of the concepts. Solutions will only be released AFTER you submit  your written homework solutions. You are expected to submit 2 files for each written homework assignment:

1) handwritten solutions

2) self-graded solutions and a one paragraph reflection on the assignment Both should be submitted as a PDF through Gradescope.

Instructions and expectations for these submissions will be posted on HuskyCT in the Orientation Folder in Course Content.

Note: the Ch 7 Written homework is optional and can be submitted for half-credit for a missed written homework assignment from Weeks 1 - 4. This must be submitted by August 9th  at 11:59 pm.

Exams

There are five exams throughout the semester, one per week. Exams will become available Friday and are due the following Monday (except for Exam 5). Exams will betaken using Lockdown Browser with Monitor. You will be required to show your UConn ID at the beginning of the exam to verify your identity. This page has instructions for downloading and installing Lockdown Browser through HuskyCT. Please be sure to do this before the first exam.

No calculators are allowed for exams. For each exam you will be allowed to create one page (front only) of handwritten notes that includes key definitions and concepts. You will be required to show this page of

notes at the beginning of the exam. No other resources are allowed. Please do not discuss the exam with anyone besides the instructor.

Note that Exam 5 is due on the last day of class, Friday August 9th by 11:59 pm.
