DEVELOPMENT
1- you are to research material on a particular instrument. Part of that will include looking for recorded songs that feature this particular instrument. Once you find a song you feel it features this particular instrument then you write about that song and the role the instrument plays, your thoughts on that recording.
2-up to you whether you include information regarding a particular song on CD, MP3, or video. You will need to include the information regarding this song in the bibliography so there you can say whether it was a video or an audio song.
Here is an example:
Let’s say I want to research congas or conga drums.
I would look for interesting articles that gives me historical background on this particular Afro-Cuban instrument, plus technical methods of playing the instrument. I would read those, find interesting particulars on the instrument, I would then quote some parts, paraphrase others, around my own writing on the instrument. I would add then those articles that I made use of to my bibliography.
Then I would look for recordings that may feature this instrument and write a personal review on the music and performance among my paper. For example for congas I could listen to the track ‘Maria Caracoles’ from the Santana ‘Festival’ album and I could discuss the role of the congas in the song, the impact of that particular rhythm on myself as a listener, the development throughout the song, the ‘solo’ spots in features in, the type of solo phrases performed in this recording: basic and open or technically advanced? variety of sounds employed, the dynamic range, the energy it conveys, etc.
