Essay Structure
An Essay is a group of paragraphs focused on ONE main Idea, one Topic. An essay’s purpose is to give information on a given topic, and in some cases, to convince/persuade the reader of your position/argument.
There are several styles of essay writing: Argumentative/ Persuasive, Classification, Compare and contrast. Each Paragraph of an essay has a different function:
Introduction: Introduces the topic and main idea.
● Hook: an interesting sentence to get the reader’s attention. The hook could be a fact, general knowledge, a current event, or an interesting story connected to the topic
● Information about the topic: give some details (W6) about the specific topic, what is it and why is it important?
● Thesis Statement: The thesis has the topic, the main idea/
argument/ opinion, and may contain an outline of the supporting ideas
Body: Supports the thesis using details and examples. A good essay has at least Three Supporting Ideas
● Topic Sentence: Gives the Supporting Idea to support the Thesis statement
● Details to explain and give more information about the supporting idea
● Examples, situations, facts, to explain the details
Conclusion: Summarizes the essay, provides an ending point
● Re-state Thesis: re-word your thesis: same topic and idea
● Summarize supporting ideas
● Final thoughts, opinions
● Leave the reader with next steps, Predictions and/or advice for the future
