Description of assessment task

Increasingly when you apply for a job the prospective employer requires you to submit a video introducing yourself. This assessment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to practice this skill.  On the basis that education should be transformative, the end of the Integrated First Year (IFY) is also a good   opportunity for you to reflect on what you have learnt about yourself, your goals, and aspirations for the future.

Approach to Task

There are three parts to this assessment, you will need to complete all three tasks to pass this assessment. There is an online workshop in Week 7 to support this assessment and your Future Work Self-reflection.

PART 1A: Future Work Self (FWS) Survey – note this is due one week prior to the video In COMM1999 you will complete the Future Work Self (FWS) survey again. All students are required to do this, even if you completed this in COMM0999 or are repeating COMM1999. As you moved through the IFY you have learned new aspects of yourself and experienced growth in many new areas. It is to be expected that as you move through your degree that your values, competencies and priorities may alter. Updating the FWS is a means to evaluate this growth and to set new, and relevant, goals for future studies.

Written Response myPortfolio on myBCom.unsw.edu.au

Completion of all compulsory information and sections, critically reflecting on each of three (3) chosen program learning outcomes (PLOs). Recommended guide is 50-100 words per PLO.

See instructions below on how to submit your myPortfolio for assessment.

Failure to follow these instructions will result in your portfolio being assessed as  not completed .

Description of assessment task

The first year myBCom myPortfolio is a repository for you to capture your reflections on your learning and development across the BCom Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) (Problem solving, Business Communication, Teamwork, Responsible Business Practice, Global and Cultural Competence, Leadership Development) during the IFY.

An ePortfolio is a tool that allows you to step back from the focus on individual assignments and courses to understand your learning journey throughout your degree - bringing together the content, skills and experiences that constitute your time as a university student. myPortfolio is a useful artefact to showcase your skills and abilities to future employers. Developing a process to document and reflect on your learning is an important aspect of mastering and orienting our professional practice.

Approach to Task

To gain a Satisfactory grade, you need to complete all compulsory sections of your first year myPortfolio and reflect on your learning activities. Attend the myPortfolio Write like a Pro Workshop held in Week 3, see the COMM1999 Moodle site for details.

Instructions

1.   Go to the myBCom platform. (myBCom.unsw.edu.au) and navigate to your first year myPortfolio

2.   Go to the tab Portfolio’ (check you have entered your name):

a.   Complete all compulsory sections under ‘Settings’

o Profile photo on myPortfolio page

o Program name/ Major(s) are identified

o Functional/working link to LinkedIn profile

b.  Complete the first two compulsory sections under ‘Description, o Summary and My Career Goals

3.   Before completing the three PLO sections, refer to the "First Year PLO Threshold Criteria" at Appendix #1 and read through the expectations for each PLO.

4.   Reflect on the activities you have completed in your first year and consider which activity aligns best to the PLO in which you would like to demonstrate your achievement.

5.   Choose THREE (3) of the SIX (6) Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) on which to base your reflection:

•    1.Problem solving 2. Communication 3. Teamwork 4. Responsible Business Practice 5. Global and Cultural Competence 6. Leadership development

6.   Using the space provided on myPortfolio under each of your 3 chosen PLOs, write a critical

reflection (avoid lengthy descriptions - recommended guideline is 50-100 words). See  Reflection Structure below for writing support.

7.   Use Section Requirements for myPortfolio  Table on Moodle to ensure you have completed all compulsory components.

Reflection Structure:

For each of your three chosen Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) write a reflection containing the following:

a.   A short explanation of your comprehension of WHY the Program Learning Outcome (PLO) is important for developing business professionals and the business world.

•    Reference the theories, frameworks, and methodologies you ve learned throughout your studies to underscore the importance of the PLOs.

b.   Choose a specific example that showcases your abilities based on experiences from within the last

12 months (not high school). Some instances where you might find a specific example to write about are:

•    an activity you have completed in class   -  e.g. a team assignment or academic project, or

•    a co-curricular activity   -  e.g. a student club, or

•    something else entirely  -  e.g. experience from work, or community group or Dashboard activities

c.   Use your specific example as evidence to describe HOW you have met the PLO threshold criteria (Appendix #1) for each chosen Program Learning Outcome (PLO) during IFY.  Use the specific language from the PLO threshold criteria document when writing the reflection on your growth.

d.  Your myPortfolio reflection should be written as if it is to be read by a prospective employer.

Impress upon them that you are someone that they would want to employ; be confident and

professional in your writing. Be concise, as this is valued by employers who are often time-poor.

Criteria

Your myPortfolio will be assessed based on the following:

All compulsory myPortfolio sections are completed.

•    Provided an informed explanation of WHY each of the 3 chosen Program Learning Outcomes are important in the business world.

•    Included an account of a specific example of your competencies for each of the 3 PLOs chosen and justified how this example aligns to that PLO s threshold criteria (Appendix #1) applying the specific language found in this document.

1.  You may submit a myPortfolio before the end of week 5 for formative feedback. Ensure you have followed all instructions in the Assessment Guide and Workshop.

If graded satisfactory then no more submissions are required.

•    If graded unsatisfactory, you have the opportunity to update your submission before ONE further attempt at a satisfactory grade. Resubmit by the end of week 10 for regrading.

Description of Assessment Task

During your degree you are engaged in learning and assessments not only on ‘Business Knowledge’ (PLO1) but also skills and capabilities (PLOs 2-7) that are important for Business graduates to succeed in increasingly complex and uncertain business environments.  You have been working on these skills and capabilities throughout your Integrated First Year courses.

Approach to Task

The purpose of this task is for you to engage in professional skills development by completing identified   curricular and co/extra-curricular activities related to PLOs. As you know, each of these activities will earn points as a way to demonstrate your progress in learning the PLO skills.

During the term, access the myBCom Dashboard to monitor your progress in accumulating sufficient PLO points and completing the mandatory modules. You are expected to self-manage your time and effort to   ensure you have completed all requirements by the week 10 deadline.

There are two parts to the Skills Dashboard assessment:

Part 3A: Refer to the myBCom Dashboard to calculate the number of myBCom points you currently have per Program Learning Outcome (PLO) and over the course of the term engage in activities to achieve the minimum required number of myBCom points (25 each PLO including 10 Course Points).

Part 3B: Complete all activities listed under the heading ‘Mandatory Activities’ on the Dashboard.

Items are only complete when shown with a green tick, this is the ONLY way to confirm completion.

•    In Week One of Term go to the myBCom Dashboard

•    Review the number of points you currently have and those you need to complete for each PLO (25 points each, including 10 Course Points).

o Experience points are earned via the ‘Earn more points’ list or claimed via self-sourced activities in the ‘Where are my points?’ link.

•    Click on the "Earn more points" link to identify which additional activities will earn you Experience Points and put together a plan to meet the minimum requirements by the end of Week 10.

Submission

•    Collect the minimum number of myBCom points (part 3A) and complete all Mandatory activities (Part 3B) on the myBCom Dashboard

Note: Many activities require an uploading time of approximately 10 business days. This means a delay between when you complete an activity and its appearance on your Dashboard.
