The purpose of this assignment is to discuss consumption patterns and to explore connections with social, ethical, and environmental concerns. The assignment relies on an assessment of the data generated from responses by class members to the on-line survey. Your task in the assignment is to explore the graphs generated from the resulting data to respond to the assignment questions. Submit your assignment as a word.doc
Assignment questions
Your responses to these questions must be based only on the assessment of the graphs. In your assessment of the data presented in the graphs, you should focus on the key issues of social, ethical, and environmental concerns and personal consumption.
Question 1. Study Figs 1 & 2. What do these graphs tell you about the opinions of the survey respondents on sustainability, ethical production, and social justice? Do you notice any contradictions between the graphs? (5 marks, ~120 words)
Question 2. Study Figs 3, 4, & 5. What motivates the shopping behavior. for clothing of the respondents to the survey. Explain the connections between the data displayed in the graphs (10 marks, ~200 words)
Question 3. Do you see conflicts between the motivation for shopping for clothing (Fig 3, 4, 5) and the opinion of the survey respondents on sustainability, ethical production, and social justice (Fig 1)? (10 marks, ~200 words)
Question 4. Does the motivation for shopping for clothing (Figs 3, 4 & 5) clarify the responses presented in Fig 2? How does the data in Fig 6 inform. this analysis? (10 marks, 200 words)
Question 5. Study Fig. 7. Provide a summary of the data presented in the graph. (5 marks, ~120 words)
Question 6. Consider Fig 7. in the context of Figs. 3, 4, 5 & 6. Do you see conflicts in the responses provided? Articulate these conflicts. (10 marks, ~200 words)
Question 7. Fig 8 suggests that respondents are aware of the negative impacts of their consumption. Considering the evidence presented in all graphs, will it be possible to ever attain sustainable consumption (200 words, 10 marks)
Writing will be assessed throughout based on the quality of the writing (sentences, grammar etc.), and the clarity and accuracy of the responses. The first page should have your name, student number, course title and number. Your assignment must be double spaced, typed in 12- point font with 1-inch margins and must observe the identified word limits.
This is not a group assignment. You should not cooperate with any other student when writing the assignment.
Submitting Assignments
The assignment is due by 9am. on October 7 to the course quercus site. Please note that this deadline is rigid and that a full day late penalty applies immediately (a 10% penalty at 9.01am., 20% at 9.01am. the following day and so on) . Assignments submitted five calendar days beyond the due date will be assigned a grade of zero. Please keep a backup copy even after it has been submitted as well as all rough work notes and other preparatory work. Submit your assignment as a word.doc
